PhD Student Research Competition

The PhD program proudly recognizes its students’ research achievements with recognition at both the Fox School’s Annual Awards Night as well as school-wide research forums.  These forums recognize the winners of both the Fox School’s annual research paper and dissertation competitions, and they afford top-tier PhD students the opportunity to present their research, receive awards and begin building their academic resumes.

In the Fox School’s PhD program, students who have received High Pass grades for their first or second year research papers are often invited to present their work in a school-wide forum, where they are given the opportunity to receive comments on their work, as well as receive awards based on these papers and possible monetary funding to continue their outstanding research.  PhD students who have recently defended their dissertation proposals are also provided with the opportunity to present their research, and recent graduates of the PhD program may compete for the honor of the Best Dissertation award.

Each concentration recommends one to two outstanding PhD students to present at this school-wide awards competition, where they are eligible to compete for these awards and receive further research or dissertation support.

Research Advancement and Impact Seedfunding

The Research Advancement and Impact Seedfunding (RAIS) Symposium is an annual event open to current Fox School faculty and PhD students for seed funding grants to undertake novel interdisciplinary research projects. The traditional RAIS seed funding grants in the amount of $500 to $5,000, with an annual amount of $50,000, will be available for proposal submission groups seeking small or medium outside funding grants. All Fox faculty and PhD students are encouraged to attend the RAIS Symposium, which takes place in the fall.

PhD Communications Initiative

In partnership with the Business Communications Center at the Fox School, the PhD Student Communication Initiative (PCI) launched in 2019, which aims to improve the communication skills of PhD students across three dimensions: written, oral (presentation) and interpersonal. PCI evaluates PhD students’ communications skills and hosts workshops, classes, online trainings and professional resources to help students improve these skills. Activities include an assessment of written, interpersonal and presentation skills; two seven-week asynchronous courses are offered in both the fall and spring semesters; and various workshops, coaching sessions and tutoring opportunities are offered throughout the year.

Math Bootcamp

The PhD program requires a two-week foundational mathematics course in August for incoming PhD students before their first semester within the program. This non-credit course aims to prepare students for their subsequent methodology courses. Courses may be waived pending an examination. This introductory course does not count toward the overall 48-credit PhD curriculum.

3MT Presentations

In 2019, the Fox School has integrated a new format for research presentation called “Three Minute Thesis” (3MT) into its doctoral programs and grant-funding competitions, helping students and junior faculty members enhance their presentation and translational research skills. The competition, originally developed by the University of Queensland in Australia, seeks to help students communicate their research to a broader audience beyond their personal academic fields. As the name suggests, participants have three minutes and a single, static presentation slide to explain their research, from the theoretical concept to their results and findings. Temple University hosted its inaugural university-wide 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition in April 2021.
