In a survey of non-profit executive officers, 69% of executives agree that a candidate’s ability to give influences their likelihood of being selected as a board member. Additionally, the vast majority of executive officers agreed that prioritizing board members' ability to give negatively affects their organization’s ability to attract people with the necessary skill sets to govern the organization.
It may sometimes be advantageous to select board members who can donate substantially. However, when non-profits select board members who lack the energy, time or experience for their role, it often interferes with the organization’s ability to achieve their mission.
